Hello, I’m Jo, the heart and soul behind Blitz and Blunders, our chess community.

My journey with chess began when I first moved to the U.S., where I found myself in a foreign land, grappling with a new language and culture. In those moments of uncertainty, chess became my refuge—a place where I could connect with others through our shared love for the game. Each move on the board felt like a step toward understanding, and every game was a chance to forge bonds that transcended words.

After taking a break from the game that had once brought me so much joy, my passion was reignited when I met Jesse James, a national master who owns a chess club in San Antonio, TX. His enthusiasm and dedication reminded me of the magic of chess—the camaraderie, the laughter, the fierce competition, and the friendships that blossom over a simple board. I realized just how much I had missed those moments of connection.

My travels through Europe for three months in 2024 only deepened that love. I played in various clubs and was met with warmth and acceptance everywhere I went. Despite the language barriers, the joy of sharing a game and the thrill of competition united us all. It was a powerful reminder of how chess can break down walls and create a sense of belonging.

Now, as I call Spokane home, I am driven by a desire to create a vibrant chess community where everyone feels welcomed and valued. I want to offer a space where players of all levels can come together to learn, compete, and celebrate our shared passion for chess. Together, let’s build a community that mirrors the warmth and connection I’ve experienced throughout my journey. I can’t wait to share this incredible adventure with you!
